Fortuna led the redesign and migration of a major European digital asset exchange's high-traffic prices API, responsible for serving billions of requests per day, to a more performant backend architecture.

Problem

Between 2021–2023, a major European digital asset exchange faced severe performance challenges as institutional adoption accelerated. Market data traffic spiked unpredictably during periods of high trading activity, at times exceeding baseline load by more than 30×.

These volatility-driven surges resulted in saturated compute resources, violated API response SLAs, and service inconsistency across retail, institutional, and partner integrations. The organization required a performance initiative that would:

  • Support a no-downtime migration of a critical live production system
  • Improve stability and request throughput during volatility-driven load bursts
  • Provide a scalable operational foundation for growing asset coverage and international expansion

Given the criticality of the system, the work required careful orchestration and senior-level reliability engineering expertise.

Solution

Fortuna led the redesign and migration of the exchange’s pricing and market data platform from a legacy monolithic storage model to a distributed, DynamoDB-based architecture purpose-built for bursty, time-series workloads.

We began by analyzing existing access patterns, latency characteristics, and failure modes across the pricing APIs, then designed a new data model optimized for real-time price delivery and high-volume historical queries. The architecture emphasized predictable performance under load, reduced resource contention, and clear isolation between read-heavy and write-heavy paths.

To minimize risk, we executed the migration in carefully controlled phases. Over 1.5 billion price records were backfilled and validated in parallel with live production traffic, using traffic shadowing, performance instrumentation, and automated rollback paths to ensure correctness and stability throughout the process.

The new system was deployed across multiple AWS regions to reduce latency for global users and improve resilience to regional failures. Throughout the engagement, Fortuna worked closely with internal engineering teams to align rollout sequencing, observability, and operational ownership, ensuring the platform could be safely evolved after migration.
